Class Messenger powered by Scholastic is a free way to keep in touch with parents. Class Messenger is more versatile than Remind, as it allows for two-way communication between parents and teachers via SMS and/or e-mail notifications.
Remind is an easy, free way to stay in touch with parents. Parents simply sign up to receive SMS or e-mail notifications from teachers. Teachers use the website to send parents (and students) important reminders. Parents can't reply with a message of their own, but they could always contact the teacher directly if they have a question or concern. (This one came from colleague Nick Trottier.)
Notability App for I-Pad and I-Phone by Ginger Labs
This year, the teacher in our middle school are conducting Reader's Workshop. We conference with and keep a file on each child. The initial idea was to have a binder for each class period with a section for every child, but I wanted something digital. I was thrilled when my colleague, Nick Trottier, told me about the Notability app. This app allows me to have a section for each child and add documents and notes as needed. It has replaced my need for binders and tab dividers, and I have all of my student data and notes at my fingertips. This app is absolutely amazing. It is well worth the $2.99 price tag.
I rarely purchase teaching
materials in a physical store anymore. When I’m planning a unit and want some
additional resources, my first stop is Teachers Pay Teachers. It is here that
teachers sell self-created materials that are highly applicable to whatever I’m
teaching. If I can’t find what I want, I create it myself and post it in my
TpT store. Follow your favorite teachers so that you are instantly notified
when they post new products. Oh yeah. Did I mention that there are TONS of free
products? Check it out. You won’t be disappointed.
IDEA! You can start your
own store if you want! Use this unique-to-me promo link when signing up: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Signup/referral:benandjacque
Sign up for free, select
your categories, and then receive notices of e-books that are deeply discounted
and FREE! Download onto your kindle or electronic device using the kindle app.
IDEA!-Have
parents/students create accounts. Students can read their self-selected books
on their electronic device wherever they are (because our students always have their phone or tablet!).
Scan the barcode of a book
with your I-Phone or I-Pad and instantly get reading levels and a summary of
the book (if it’s in the scholastic database) with the Scholastic Book Wizard. Create individual lists for
students or classes. Manage your lists and search for books on your electronic
device or on your computer.
IDEA!-Use this for a
check-out/check-in system when students want to take books out of the
classroom. (I know I lose hundreds of dollars of books each year. Maybe this
will help…)
Teachers write proposals
for classroom projects and donors contribute money for the projects. Once all
of the money for the project has been contributed, the company sends the
materials to your school. What a great way to get some much-needed materials!
